We can’t all be the very essence of rock ‘n roll like Evonne & Henry, but now’s your chance to dress up (or not) and dance your bobbie socks and saddle shoes off!!
Open to the whole family: Adults $5 and $3 for children under 12 years old.
Shawnee Senior Center received an award of $15,000 from the Avedis Foundation to support our Senior Fitness Program. Together with the Title III funds received from COEDD-Area Agency on Aging, this will almost fully fund our fitness program and allow us to add another TAI CHI: Working for Better Balance class in Tecumseh.
What can I say? The 15 ft ladder isn't always available to take advantage of these photos ops!!
The fitness program provides other benefits that are as valuable as fitness – social interaction, friendship, camaraderie. Many of our participants have received diagnoses of life altering diseases or conditions such as cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s along with the normal aging issues life throws at us all – death of a loved one, poverty, crippling arthritis, heart or lung diseases. The friendships developed at the senior center have helped participants through recovery and in many cases, adapting to life’s changes.
The posted January 2017 Calendar of Activities provides the times of classes at the Shawnee Senior Center and we also have classes in Asher at the Asher Senior Center, Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:30-11:30am and Meeker at the Meeker Senior Center, Thursdays from 11:00am-12:00pm.
If you have any questions about the Senior Fitness Program or other Shawnee Senior Center activities, call 405-878-1528 or contact us on our Facebook page: Shawnee Senior Center and Municipal Auditorium. As with other fitness programs, most of the attendees are women. Most men seem to prefer to exercise independently but we do have men in our classes. Our success is reflected in each of these participants that can share an experience where they were able to stop themselves from a fall that, had they not been taking the class, might have been disastrous. But – unlike other fitness programs, we offer these classes free of charge!
TAMMY is an Oklahoma licensed Massage Therapist in her 10th year of practice and comes to the Shawnee Senior Center on Thursday mornings from 8:30 until 10:30 by appointment.

Do you have muscle and/or joint pain?Tammy provides therapeutic chair, hand or foot massages $15/15-minutes (more time if you like) and if you would like a 60-minute, full body massage, all you need to do is schedule an appointment. Also, Tammy gives a portion of your cost to Shawnee Senior Center to support our programs and services!
She also practices with Dr. Willa Weisel, at American Chiropractic Clinic on Highland St. in Shawnee. So if Thursdays are not your best day, she can take you at American Chiropractic Clinic.

Thank you, Marie Gawf, for taking this project and running with it! We now have this beautiful bulletin board to give people ideas for sharing random acts of kindness. The goal is to foster kindness and goodwill among our participants…. and sometimes, ya just need a hug!!
Shawnee Senior Center received a grant for $32,950 from Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program to fight hunger. The grant will be used to add more nutritional food to the breakfast menu and for dedicated staff for meal preparation, shopping, etc.
Kas Murdock, the Breakfast Coordinator, will now have Melissa Dethrow as an assistant to help her with the meals, prep, clean up and shopping. Kas has been making meals for three years now. Shawnee Milling Company has been providing flour and gravy mix since the program began. Kas’ daughter, Karen Trevino, uses the flour to make homemade biscuits and bread (OMG – amazing!!).
We are so grateful to Shawnee Milling, and now Walmart Foundation for their commitment to fighting hunger among our seniors.
Thank you, Walmart Foundation and Shawnee Milling Company!
